The Fundamental Freedoms Program is dedicated to defending and promoting rights that are the most essential to a healthy democracy, such as freedom of expression, freedom of peaceful assembly, freedom of association, freedom of conscience and religion, democratic rights and mobility rights. These rights are not only foundational constitutional protections in Canada – they are the tools through which individuals and communities, particularly those who are marginalized or underrepresented, amplify their voices, challenge the status quo, and drive meaningful change.
Through strategic Charter litigation and interventions, engagement with policymakers and the media, as well as public education, we at CCLA tirelessly push back against overly broad state restrictions that rob people of their most basic freedoms.
Our principled approach is anchored in our strong belief that robust protection of civil liberties is the only way to achieve a truly free and democratic society.
