OTTAWA — Cara Zwibel, Director of Fundamental Freedoms for the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA), made the following remarks today:

Minister Mendicino confirmed today there were no geographic limitations on Emergency Orders. Under testimony, the Minister could not point to any section of the order that limited its geographic scope.

CCLA has contended since the Act was invoked that the Emergency Orders, as written, were overly broad and affected every person in Canada. Our concerns about the impact of the orders on the rights and freedoms of all people in Canada have not been explored in any detail during the Commission’s proceedings, but it is an area the CCLA is committed to addressing and one we hope will be picked up in the Commission’s report.
