CCLA REACTS TO DECISION IN DOBBS V JACKSON WOMEN’S HEALTH ORGANIZATION

Cara Zwibel, Director of Fundamental Freedoms for the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, made the following statement:

Today’s ruling from the Supreme Court of the United States is an appalling step back in the ongoing struggle for equality and the consequences for the health and dignity of women, girls and trans individuals who need abortions will be dire.

We are deeply troubled not only by this decision but by the laws that may be enacted by some states in its wake – laws that will not eliminate abortion, only eliminate access to safe abortions.

Abortion is healthcare. And we are lucky that in Canada most Canadians have access to abortion services through provincial healthcare systems.

This is not true in New Brunswick – 90% of New Brunswickers do not have adequate access to abortion services. New Brunswick’s government has restricted abortion services to three hospitals in two cities – CCLA is currently in court to restore access to abortion services to all New Brunswickers.

CCLA’s case was filed on January 6, 2021. The government of New Brunswick unsuccessfully argued the suit should not be heard. The case is continuing through the discovery process.
