TORONTO — Noa Mendelsohn Aviv, Executive Director of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, made the following statement today;
The Canadian Civil Liberties Association is delighted the Ontario government has backed down and will repeal bill 28.
The notwithstanding clause is a dangerous threat to rights and freedoms and was never meant to be used in contract negotiations.
This should serve as a warning to all governments that people in Canada cherish our freedoms, our civil liberties, and our human rights – and we will fight to defend them.
CCLA has been fighting Bill 21 in Quebec (that also invokes the clause) since the day it was enacted, and is in court this week along with countless others against this egregious rights violation.
