TORONTO — Harini Sivalingam, Director of the Equality Program of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, made the following statement in response to the Premier of Ontario’s callous comments on unhoused encampment residents:
The Canadian Civil Liberties Association is deeply concerned by recent comments made by the Premier of Ontario that disparaged some of the most vulnerable residents in Ontario.
Elected officials should take accountability for their policy failures rather than stigmatizing people who are unhoused. Governments at all levels have played a role in creating the conditions that have led many people to live in vulnerable situations. They should provide meaningful solutions that respects the dignity, rights and freedoms of vulnerable members of society.
The CCLA will continue to support the fundamental freedoms of all of us in Canada, including marginalized and vulnerable members of society.
