TORONTO — Cara Zwibel, Director of Fundamental Freedoms for the CCLA, made the following statement:
The freedom to participate in our democracy is a cause worth fighting for.
We have a history of providing a broad perspective on the purpose of Charter rights and their impact on civil liberties, including democratic rights. That will be a perspective worth considering by the courts in this case.
The government’s decision to invoke the notwithstanding clause in order to silence its critics can’t go unopposed.
CCLA will be seeking to intervene in Working Families’ new challenge to the third party advertising restrictions.
