The Canadian Civil Liberties Association is calling on York Region to establish an independent external review of the July 30, 2026, use-of-force incident involving a young Black man with a cognitive disability at the Newmarket Bus Terminal. The CCLA is raising concerns about use of force, racial profiling, disability accommodation, de-escalation, and the broader accountability framework governing York Region Transit Police special constables. The organization also urges York Region and the Province to strengthen independent civilian oversight of transit enforcement powers to ensure public transit remains safe, accessible, and respectful of everyone’s rights and dignity.
