The CCLA echoes the call of the Faqiri family for the Government of Ontario to apologize for Soleiman Faqiri’s death, which was ruled a homicide by the jurors in his inquest. As the CCLA has previously emphasized, the use of pepper spray, significant force, and excessive restraints by correctional officers against Mr. Faqiri, who experienced mental health issues, is seriously alarming.
We also call on the Ministry of the Solicitor General to publicly and specifically state how they will act on the recommendations from Mr. Faqiri’s inquest, including the recommendation that Ontario create an independent correctional inspectorate.
