FREDERICTON — Harini Sivalingam, Director of the Equality Program at the Canadian Civil Liberties Association made the following statement:
The Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) is pleased to announce that we have discontinued our legal challenge to New Brunswick’s changes to Policy 713—the province’s sexual orientation and gender policy in schools.
CCLA initiated litigation in September 2023 against the previous government’s harmful roll back of protections for trans and gender diverse students. In December, the Government of New Brunswick reversed these changes to provide a safer, more affirming and inclusive learning environment for all New Brunswick students. Those changes reversed the significant harms caused by the previous government’s policy.
This victory would not be possible without the tireless advocacy of individuals and organizations in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and their allies in New Brunswick.
The CCLA will continue to defend and protect the rights and freedoms for all of us in Canada and continues to fight harmful anti-trans policies in other parts of the country—particularly ones that target gender diverse youth.
CCLA is grateful for the excellent pro bono legal services of Benjamin Perryman, Barrister and Solicitor, and Sheree Conlon of Nijhawan McMillian & Conlon Barristers in this case.
