Ms. Noa Mendelsohn Aviv informed the Board of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) and the Canadian Civil Liberties Education Trust (CCLET) of her intention to resign as Executive Director and General Counsel.
Ms. Mendelsohn Aviv made the following statement:
“It is with mixed feelings that I have decided to offer my resignation to the CCLA and CCLET Board. Together we have done tremendous work to advance the pursuit of equality, justice, rights and freedoms across Canada. We have fought for change and held governments accountable when they threatened our constitutional democracy, and treated marginalized individuals and communities unfairly. It has been an honour to lead CCLA. It is now time for me to engage in professional enrichment, and to return to advocacy.”
The Board acknowledges with deep gratitude Ms. Mendelsohn Aviv’s many achievements, over the past 22 years at CCLA. This includes her successful advocacy against racial profiling and prolonged solitary confinement, and for reproductive justice and 2SLGBTQ+ rights, and her
successes in growing the advocacy and education programs with more team members, creative partnerships, and new initiatives across Canada. CCLA’s enhanced team is engaged in core and new advocacy issues from democratic freedoms to climate justice, artificial intelligence to trans rights, digital rights to criminal justice, and equality for all people and communities.
This important work will continue uninterrupted through the transition period, thanks to the excellence of the CCLA and CCLET teams while the Board moves to appoint a new leader.
