Shakir Rahim, Director of the Criminal Justice Program, made the following statement:
“Respect for judicial independence and the rule of law is the cornerstone of our constitutional democracy. The call by the Premier of Ontario for a Superior Court judge to apologize for observations and findings made on the evidence before her in the Umar Zameer trial is wholly unacceptable. No impropriety by the judge has been alleged or occurred. It is not the role of an elected official to quarterback a trial or the judiciary.”
