TORONTO — Shakir Rahim, Director of Criminal Justice for The Canadian Civil Liberties Association made the following statement:
“Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw’s statement challenging the authority of the jury verdict acquitting Umar Zameer was unacceptable. Despite Chief Demkiw’s subsequent comments, he has not repudiated or apologized for his initial statement.”
“We have written to the Toronto Police Services Board to ask they clarify that Chief Demkiw’s statement was inappropriate and explain how they will ensure the Chief of Police, and members of the TPS assigned to cases, do not publicly malign decisions or criminal verdicts in future.”
