Today, CCLA’s Executive Director wrote to Alberta’s Premier expressing deep concern over the plan to invoke the notwithstanding clause on three laws targeting trans and gender-diverse Albertans.

This move would strip away fundamental Charter rights and freedoms and immunize the legislation from being struck down as unconstitutional. CCLA urges the Premier to reconsider this course of action which threatens vulnerable communities, undermines equality, and weakens the very foundation of our democracy.

The notwithstanding clause was never meant to be a routine tool of governance. Normalizing its use risks eroding rights for everyone.
