MONTREAL – The Quebec government’s latest plan to ban religious symbols in daycare centres is yet another assault on religious freedoms, equality, and basic human dignity. The Canadian Civil Liberties Association calls on the Quebec government to abandon this divisive scheme immediately and to stop weaponizing a distorted view of secularism as a political tool.

“This proposal targets religious and racialized minorities, especially Muslim, Sikh, and Jewish communities,” said Harini Sivalingam, director of the Equality program at the CCLA.

“It would deepen the shameful legacy of exclusion set in motion by Bill 21 – a legislation that we are currently challenging at the Supreme Court of Canada.”

“Stripping people of their right to work because of their faith has no place in a democracy,” said Anaïs Bussières McNicoll, director of Fundamental Freedoms program at the Canadian Civil Liberties Association.

“Quebec’s children deserve to grow up in welcoming spaces that reflect the province’s diversity.”
