BOGOTA — Harini Sivalingam, Director of the Equality Program at the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, reacted to the Government of Saskatchewan today:
Invoking the notwithstanding clause is an admission the Saskatchewan government knows its actions will not withstand Charter scrutiny.
The notwithstanding clause is the nuclear option. Using it to destroy the rights of students is unconscionable.
The notwithstanding clause is not a weapon that should be used to strip anyone of their rights, let alone vulnerable and marginalized students.
That the government is doing so after losing in court shows they have little respect for rights and freedoms.
