CCLA APPOINTS NEW DIRECTOR, EQUALITY PROGRAM
August 8, 2022
TORONTO — The Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) has appointed lawyer Gillian Moore as its Equality Program Director.
Gillian joined CCLA from Stockwoods LLP, where she practiced law for several years. She previously clerked at the Court of Appeal for Ontario and at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia, in The Hague. Before commencing her legal career, Gillian worked in humanitarian aid abroad, in East Africa. She received her B.A. (Hons) from Queen’s University, and her J.D. from the University of Windsor, with distinction.
Gillian has a particular interest and expertise in public law litigation, as it relates to state accountability, and believes strongly in using litigation as a tool to bring about changes in legislation, policy and practice. To that end, she has worked on a variety of cases and campaigns aimed at strengthening national laws and compliance with human rights norms.
“I am thrilled to be joining the CCLA as Director of the Equality Program. I believe strongly in using litigation as a tool to fight against injustice and oppression, and I have a deep and abiding commitment to tackling systemic issues affecting historically marginalized individuals and communities. I look forward to building on the exemplary work that the CCLA has already achieved”, stated Moore.
“We are delighted to welcome Gillian to lead CCLA’s Equality Program. Gillian has a great deal of experience in, and a demonstrated commitment to, equality issues, having worked on such issues as racial profiling, migration, and human rights both at home and internationally”, said Noa Mendelsohn Aviv, Executive Director and General Counsel of the CCLA.
The CCLA is equally delighted to welcome Michael Lowery in his new role as Annual Fund Manager, Advancement, and Colleen Larkin in her new role as Office Manager / Executive Assistant.
Mendelsohn Aviv, along with the CCLA’s Board of Directors, are grateful for the generosity of donors, individual supporters, communities, lawyers, and funders who make this work possible.
