TORONTO — In commemoration of the late Clayton Ruby’s extraordinary impact on advancing social justice in Canada, and on the eve of the anniversary of his passing (Aug. 2, 2022), the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) announces the unveiling of the “Clayton Ruby Fund” – a new initiative designed to preserve and extend the renowned lawyer’s 50-year legacy of involvement in some of the most iconic legal cases and social movements in Canada.
The Clayton Ruby Fund aims to engage and support the next generation of public interest litigators and advocates in their pursuit of social justice. This initiative will provide fellowships for law students, empowering them to champion important causes and pave the way for a fairer, more just and equitable Canada. Additionally, the fund will establish an annual lecture series to inspire and invigorate current and future generations of changemakers.
“The Clayton Ruby Fund is a testament to the enduring impact of Clayton Ruby’s work in the realm of social justice. By supporting aspiring legal advocates, we carry forward his legacy, fostering a brighter future for our society,” said Noa Mendelsohn Aviv, Executive Director and General Counsel of the CCLA.
Rosemary Oliver, Director of Advancement of the CCLA, added, “This fund was established through a generous donation from long-time CCLA donor Elaine Slater and her family who wished to honour Mr. Ruby as an outstanding champion of rights and justice. We are grateful to the Slater family, and Mr. Ruby’s family, for allowing us to use this fund to support the next generation of rights defenders and advocates.”
Clayton Ruby, a trailblazer and champion of civil liberties, devoted his life to challenging the status quo and defending the rights of the marginalized and disenfranchised. Throughout his illustrious career, he navigated complex legal terrain, leading to groundbreaking victories that continue to shape Canada’s legal landscape.
“Clayton Ruby was a fearless advocate who breathed life into the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Many of the constitutional rights and freedoms we take for granted today have been the direct result of Clay’s tireless efforts. He has inspired generations of lawyers, judges and academics who dare to dream of a more equitable, more fair and more humane Canada,” concluded Nader Hasan, CCLA Board Member and former firm partner.
