The Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) released the following letter to the Ontario Attorney General raising concerns about democratic accountability in light of the growing number of locally elected school boards being placed under ministerial supervision. CCLA shares the concerns of other civil society groups of signals that the government is considering eliminating elected school boards across Ontario without meaningful consultation.
In the letter, CCLA calls on the Ontario government to:
• Swiftly restore democratic governance to all supervised school boards;
• Engage in meaningful consultation with students, parents, families, educators, and communities whose voices have been excluded; and
• Abandon any proposal to eliminate elected school boards across the province.
