TORONTO — Harini Sivalingam, Director of the Equality Program at the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, reacted to the proposed gender identity and sexual orientation policy announced in Alberta today:
The Alberta government’s proposed gender identity and sexual orientation policy will rob 2SLGBTQIA+ people of their rights and freedoms.
These policies are a clear and blatant attack on freedom.
The implementation of these policies will create further divisions and will make it dangerous for trans and gender diverse youth and adults in Alberta.
Everyone deserves to be safe, live with dignity, and have their rights and freedoms respected.
CCLA is currently challenging changes made to Policy 713 that target trans and gender diverse students in New Brunswick.
We are closely monitoring the developments in Alberta and support advocacy efforts to use all legal tools available to protect rights and freedoms of trans and gender diverse people in the province and across Canada.
