They are places where competing ideas can be tested, debated, and scrutinized,\u201d said Howard Sapers, Executive Director of the CCLA. <span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isselectedend\"><span style=\"color: black;\">In this case, the petitioners challenge policies and actions of the University of British Columbia that support Indigenous territorial acknowledgements, promote diversity in faculty and staff hiring processes, and statements about issues related to the conflict in Gaza. The petitioners argue that these policies and actions violate provisions of British Columbia&#8217;s <i>University Act<\/i> requiring universities to be \u201cnon-political.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isselectedend\"><span style=\"color: black;\">\u201cIndigenous territorial acknowledgements, equitable hiring initiatives, and protections for freedom of expression reflect commitments to human rights, equality, and academic freedom. These are not partisan or political positions\u201d said Harini Sivalingam, Director of the Equality Program at the CCLA. \u201cTreating efforts to advance Indigenous reconciliation, inclusion, and free expression as political risks undermines the very principles that universities are meant to uphold.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\">The CCLA is intervening to argue that, if Charter values are to be considered in the interpretation of the <span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange SCXW146963430 BCX4\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW146963430 BCX4\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW146963430 BCX4\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">term \u201cnon-political\u201d in the<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>University Act,<\/em><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0that interpretation must apply in a manner<\/span> that takes into account the full range of <i>chartes<\/i> values and fosters an inclusive, equitable and open learning environment.
