CCLET Announces Winner of 9th Annual Bernard Chernos Essay Competition

Congratulations go to Katherine De Sousa, and her teacher, Chio Gray, of Toronto’s Ursula Franklin Academy, for winning First Prize in the CCLET’s 9th Annual Bernard Chernos Essay Competition! Katherine’s submission skillfully addressed the question of whether or not a woman, who is the victim of a sexual assault, should be required to remove her religious facial covering while testifying against her alleged attacker in court. Katherine as well as her teacher’s department will each receive $250 and a signed copy of A. Alan Borovoy’s book, When Freedoms Collide.

Thank you to all the students who have made submissions. We hope that you will continue to be interested in the important issues we must all face in our democratic society and that you will consider participating again in next year’s competition.
