CCLA Urges Changes to Sex Offender Registry Legislation

CCLA recently sent a letter to the federal Public Safety Committee urging reconsideration of proposed changes to the sex offender registry that would result in automatic inclusion of certain offenders and broader use of registry data. In its letter, the CCLA suggested that courts should be given more discretion to determine which offenders are, and are not, appropriate for inclusion on the sex offender registry, and that more clarity needs to be provided as to when it is appropriate to use registry data for preventative purposes.
