The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that it will hear CCLA’s arguments in three upcoming cases that deal with freedom of the press, freedom of expression and the openness of our judicial system. The Federal government’s “sponsorship scandal”, and the litigation that has flowed from it, serves as the backdrop to all three cases. The Court will consider fundamental questions regarding the confidentiality of journalists’ sources and the permissibility of a court order that prospectively banned a journalist from reporting on a subject.
The trilogy of cases will be heard on October 21 and are all titled Globe and Mail, a division of CTVglobemedia Publishing Inc. v. Attorney General of Canada, et al.. The SCC file numbers are 33114, 33097 and 32975.
