CCLA urges principal to rescind book ban

CCLA was dismayed to read recent reports that a Ontario secondary school principal had banned To Kill a Mockingbird from the grade 10 classrooms at his school. The ban was reportedly prompted by a parent’s concern over the book’s language. While there is no end to controversial, and arguably offensive, material – both in and out of the classroom – the initial response should be intelligent discussion, not censorship. CCLA urges the principal to rescind the ban, which sets a poor example for the students at the school, and a poor precedent for freedom of expression generally.
